This video installation was developed for the Gleimhaus in Halberstadt. The former home of Johann Wilhelm Ludwig Gleim (1719-1803) is now a museum of literature, the German Enlightenment and friendship. Gleim was a poet, collector and patron of art. He had a cataract and became blind after a failed eye surgery.
The word pairs of the video projection (wall and floor) refer to basic philosophical concepts, to aspects of Gleim's life and to historical developments since the Enlightenment.
The formation of anagrams is intended to show that every attribution and determination can only be a snapshot. Thinking is not static and always needs a contrast. Every process can have a flipside that has not been taken into account yet.
The German verb “aufklären” (enlightening) is an anagram of “Laufkräne” (overhead cranes) which are used in industrial context or for moving heavy freight in a shipping process. The video shows 87 pairs of anagrams. Visitors to the exhibition are invited to consider whether and how the ideas of the Enlightenment can be updated and made fruitful for the 21st century.
