Frotter la Cité

Video, SD, stereo, 6:19 min., 2020

With a disability, every movement through the urban space becomes a protest movement. The video shows me walking around my block with a video camera mounted onto my white cane with the lens directed to the ground. Similar to creating a frottage, the tip of the cane is recording the roughness of the surface. When the bumps are too hard, video errors are created. The soundtrack is recording the oscillating movement as well and is sensible to mechanical shocks.

The video was shown at “Einzeichnen. Festival zur zeichnerischen Eroberung der Stadt” (Festival for conquering the city through drawing), in October 2020 at Berlinische Galerie. It was combined with “Frottagen-Collagen” a participatory installation. Visitors of the festival could do their own frottages and add them to the growing collage.
